The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) has welcomed the devolution policy position statement, published by Sport England.

On Wednesday 10th June 2026, Sport England’s published their devolution policy position statement, which outlines how the transfer of decision-making powers to local communities provides a major opportunity to improve access to sport and physical activity and support better health for all.

CIMSPA welcomes the clear recognition it gives to the role that the sector can play in delivering local growth, prevention and wellbeing ambitions.

Clare Dunn, Associate Director for Business Engagement at CIMSPA said:

“As decision-making continues to move closer to communities, it is vital that the sector works collaboratively with local leaders, partners and wider stakeholders to ensure physical activity is embedded across place-based priorities, with the development of a skilled, inclusive and sustainable workforce recognised as a key priority.

We are already seeing the impact of this work locally, with strong partnerships helping to connect national ambition with local insight and delivery. Collaboration is key to ensuring that communities have access to safe, inclusive and welcoming opportunities to be active, while also supporting broader outcomes around health, skills, employability, community cohesion and economic growth. A confident and capable workforce will be central to turning these ambitions into lasting local impact.

We look forward to continuing to work with Sport England and partners across the sector to prioritise workforce development, strengthen local capacity and help realise the opportunities that devolution presents for people and places across England.”
