Professional status is a celebration of your expertise, ensuring that you are recognised for the great work you do by your peers, employers, the public and professionals in other sectors.
The overview
Professional status provides the opportunity to make professional recognition a reality. Having a professional status is a way to show the world that you are a trained and highly skilled professional in your chosen career. In occupations described by the sector’s professional standards, there are one or more professional statuses that indicate the level of expertise and experience you have in that role.
As you progress in your career, you can gain new professional statuses that celebrate your expertise and allow you to explore more opportunities in your work.
A professional status is:
Earned – by successfully completing learning and development that is aligned to the sector’s professional standards
Issued – by CIMSPA as a chartered professional body and recognised regulator
Maintained – through continuous professional development and by being professionally regulated by the CIMSPA code of conduct for members.

Recognised. Respected. Valued.
Introduced as an integral part of your CIMSPA membership in 2025, the familiarity of professional status has quickly grown throughout the sport and physical activity sector, particularly among employers.
As organisations increasingly value professionals who can prove their competence, not just claim it, careers are becoming more accessible to those who hold a recognised status. Not only is it a way to show the sector what you’re capable of, it’s making it easier for you to stand out and for employers to find you as you progress your career.
Holding a professional status is a clear way to demonstrate your expertise to employers, confirming that you are qualified and competent in your role. CIMSPA’s application process verifies your qualifications and their equivalency, meaning a streamlined recruitment process for employers. This enables them to quickly and efficiently fulfil roles.
Also allowing for clearer career pathways, it provides a robust framework to enable employers to align staff development with ready-made career development routes. In turn, individuals will be more inclined to stay with their employer as they support their staff to gain and progress their professional status.
As collaboration on exercise referral schemes becomes more common, your professional status matters. It provides healthcare professionals with confidence that you are a qualified and competent practitioner, able to fulfil the referral. In turn, this partnership between the sport and physical activity sector and healthcare enables them to better support the local community.
Supporting your career journey
Professional status isn’t a one-off achievement; it’s a framework that grows with you. Whether you’re just starting out or leading teams across the sector, CIMSPA’s professional status pathways give you a clear route to your next milestone.
If you’re a practitioner, your journey can take you from Practitioner through to Chartered Senior Practitioner. If you work in management, there’s an equivalent pathway, from Entry Manager through to Chartered Senior Manager. At every stage, you know exactly what’s required of you and exactly what you’ll gain by getting there.
This structure gives your career direction. Rather than wondering what’s next, you can see the standards you need to meet, the experience you need to evidence and the recognition waiting for you when you meet them. As you progress, your professional title and postnominals, such as MCIMSPA or FCIMSPA, evolve with you, giving you a way to signal your growing expertise at every level.
Your professional status also travels with you. Digital badges make your credentials secure, shareable and instantly verifiable, whether you’re adding them to your CV, your LinkedIn profile or your email signature. That means every step of progress you make is visible to the people who matter: employers, colleagues, and the clients and communities you support.
Your career. Your professional body.
Being part of CIMSPA means being part of something bigger than your own role. As the chartered professional body for the UK’s sport and physical activity sector, CIMSPA exists to raise standards, protect the public and champion the professionals who make the sector what it is.
That matters for your career in ways that go beyond a membership. It means the standards your professional status is built on are shaped by the sector itself, kept current and recognised well beyond any single employer. It means you’re held to, and protected by, a code of conduct that gives employers, deployers and the public confidence in you as a professional. And it means that when the sector needs a voice, whether that’s influencing government policy, shaping national frameworks or building relationships with partners like the NHS, CIMSPA is speaking on your behalf.
Choosing to build your career with your professional body behind you is choosing long-term credibility over short-term convenience. It’s an investment in a career that’s recognised wherever it takes you.
